Ok, so my girls and I went down to the local creek last night to catch some small crays for my 55 gallon tank. I had already scoped out a spot the night before, so I knew where to look. An hour later, we had about a dozen 3/4" to 1" crays, which is about the biggest i expected to find. Just as I was about to pack up and go home, I felt something pricky on my foot. Lo and behold, I had a 4 1/2" long crawfish just sitting there on my right foot, looking at me!!! Naturally, my first reaction was to kick! (PUNT!!!) I immediately chased after it(WHAT WAS I THINKING!!!!!!) and found it unharmed in the grass.

He seems pretty happy and is getting along with his tank mates well.

Nice!

ok, so yesterday i did a little online investigation and found out "he" is really a "she"?!?!? she is a rusty crayfish, which surprise!!!!! is an invasive species around here. no biggie. any ideas on specific behaviors to watch for, i.e. egg laying, etc.? and what would be a good diet for her? so far, all she's done is halfheartedly pick at shrimp pellets, while the smaller rusties in my tank have completely decimated all of the anacharis in my tank.

I would feed her a piece of lettuce or zuchini boiled for 20 seconds and cooled in ice water. I remember I had a crayfish when I was 8, but it died after 10 minutes. I put water straight from the hose into a 10 gallon tank and plopped it right in. Funny story, "I kicked a crayfish yesterday and now she is living with me."

nice catch

i'd just watch for disappearing fishies. nice find though.
