Mega-Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover Replaces Skimmer, Refugium, part 1-4

why doesnt anybody mention this to newbees?every time I read a thread that says New To Saltwater Need Help! the first thing people say is get a skimmer. Why dont they bring this up when it comes to people setting up saltwater tanks for the first time?

Screen Recomendations

I've been doing research on the ultimate screen material. I want it to have all the best characteristics, so if you have some ideas as to what the material should do, or what it should have, let's hear it.

my tank is still fresh and just finished cycling progress , but i build this filter and put in my sump and for screen i used a drilled fiberglass board that i use in electronic projects ( they call it veroboard in here ) and put it in acid to remove all the copper side , it has hole every 1.5 mm ... i donno if it will work fine or not , the reason i used it is : 1-it has lotsa holes ,2-it s thick (u can find different thickness )and so it s easy to wash !
it s easy to cut too and u can find different sizes with different number of holes and with different hole sizes ...
here s a pic :

Because it really isn't all that it is cracked up to be, used to be BIG in the early 90's but fell out of favor among aquariest because of the high risks involved. You can achieve the same results with just a refugium and macro algae.

Owl:

Make very sure you removed every bit of copper. I'm not sure I would trust it, unless you are fish-only.

Ace:

Why old-style ( before July 2008 ) scrubbers went away:

o Adey held the patent on the dumping-design, and sued anyone who tried to sell them. And Adey himself did not sell them. So there was nowhere to buy them:

Algal Turf Scrubber, United States Patent 4333263:
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4333263.html

o People thought that since the dumping-design was the only patented design, it must be the only design that worked, so nobody tried other designs. Obviously, it is not the only design that works.

o People who tried to DIY the dumping-design soon found out how difficult it was to build and adjust for proper operation (most people gave up.) Those who got it working soon found out how noisy and splashy it was.

o People, including Aday, did not know that scrubbers must be cleaned once per week in FW. If they are not cleaned once per week in FW, the underlying layers of algae will get covered by new algae and will die; this causes yellowing of the water, and cloudiness. And if they are not cleaned in FW, copepods will eat so much of the algae that nitrate and phosphate will be put back into the water, reducing the results of the scrubber. Adey himself said he once went an entire year without cleaning.

o People did not know that the screen must be removed from the system before it is cleaned. If the screen is not removed first, all the broken algae parts and contents will drain back into the system, causing coloring and cloudiness.

o Here's the big one: Old-style scrubbers only had DIY people to support them, and these people had no promotion budgets. Skimmer manufacturers, however, had large promotion budgets. So skimmers were promoted, and scrubbers were not. So it "looked" like skimmers were better.
