Melafix and Catfish

I noticed that my Jewel cichlid ended up with a case of fin rot. Did some looking around and said the best thing to cure it is Melafix. One thing I did noticed on it, was that it doesn't mention if it can be used around catfish or not...I added the right amount of it but my African featherfin hasn't been acting right after about 15 mins. Should I leave it in there or transfer it to another tank while treating this one?

I haven't heard of Melafix being unsafe for any fish at all except for a rumor that perhaps it's not good for labyrinth fish. (Jury still out on that one.)

If you think the cat is feeling yucky from it, then do a few water changes until you've replaced a good 70-80% of the water and then go with a 1/4-1/2 dose of the Melafix.

You should really be making sure that the water stays fresh and clean whenever you have a fish with fin rot, as that really speeds the healing anyway. In fact it might be as if not more effective than any medicine.

I agree, a few extra wc's can do wonders, iv never had to use Melafix...:dance2:
 
I would agree with all of the above statements, but I have great results treating fin rot with melafix. I also add a little aquarium salt with the water change, as it is known to promote healing as well (It works as a preservitive, preventing harmful bacteria from attacking the already damaged fins).
 
Guess I'll try doing a water change tomorrow. I'll cheat and test the water while I'm at work. Poor guy looks like heck but he's still alive and swimming. Also noticed that he's got almost a fungus, looks like watery cotton all over his belly to his tail. He still eats, gave him 3 small pellets earlier so he doesn't want to give up just yet. The catfish is looking better now, probably just hungry or mad cause I turned the light on too.
