MelaFix for Ich?

I have unfortunately had a good amount of experience(successful and unsucessful) with Ich recently.

It seems there are 3 keys:

  • catching it early
  • increasing aeration in addition to temperature
  • continuing treatment
It also seems that even with successful treatment initially things get worse before they get better.

the heat/salt method does work.. there are some species of fish that are more sensitive.
the treatment is not quick..in terms that the treatment may need to run for 10-14 days.. and sometimes longer. some ich are resistant to this method.. but in general it is effective .. as are many of the meds.
Verbal is correct..when you raise the tamp it is critical to also increase circulation in the tank.. adding an air stone will help.. higher temp water tends to hold less dissolved O2..so it is important to increase aeration .. a fish becoming lethargic /listless is usually an early sign of the lower O2 levels in the tank. as is gasping at the top of the tank.

Any medication can be harmful if used incorrectly, and some fish are more sensitive to medications than others. If you have a specific scenario in mind and are concerned, your best bet will be to start a new thread with all the pertinent details (ie, tank setup, age, fish, medication, why you are treating)
