I make my own Melafix and it works just as well. There has been a bunch of talk about this over on www.cichlid-forum.com.
I just took a 20ml bottle of melaluca oil and mixed it in a 2l pop bottle filled with distilled water. You have to shake it relly well before using but it doesn't seem to jsut float on teh top of the tank water likei expected. When i use it i don't have a oil slick on the water.
I"ll try to find the link to teh messages on the other board. Also do a search for DIY melafix and lots come up.
A bunch of people in ym aquarim club also use it with great results. Now only if i could find out how to make Pimafix.
