my leaves are turning redish brown, thought it was lack of light of lack of something, however per Plangeek.com it states "Under intense lighting leaves will turn red-brown"

how much is enough light for them?

i do leave the light on from morning to night, ranging from 12-15 hours

anyone has melon swords?

can anyone help?
 
Is it possible that you have a red melon sword?
 
i don't think so,

accourding to the info i found the red melon swords the leaves come out red then turn green as they mature.

that is not the case with mine swords.

also the pics i'm looking at of the red swords, the stems seem short, the leaves look very close to the ground.

mine however are much taller, stems very long, 2 of my swords are about a foot long.
 
I have a red melon sword in my tank. It was a freebie when I ordered my plants. Anyways, the leaves on mine come out a very vibrant red-purple. They will stay that way for a few weeks, and then slowly turn green as they mature. I do like this plant, as it has not grown very large in the past several months since I got it. The leaves with this one will stay low, unless there is a lack of light(then the leaves will grow to get to the light).

With yours, when the leaves turn red-brown, do they begin to rot, or does the leaf still seem intact?

How much light do you have on the tank? I noticed that you leave the light on 12-15 hours. Leaving a low watt light on longer will not make up for not enough watts. If you do have a higher watt(2+WPG) fixture, 12 hours is more than enough. My plants look like there beginning to wilt around 10 hours!(3.7 WPG)

I have a melon sword, up until a couple days ago it was under only 2 wpg. the leaves come in dark red and then fade to a faded red color as they get older. they have not ever turned green, though the original leaves on it when i brought it home from the store were tall and green. the new leaves have stayed no taller than around 3 inches and produces around 2 leaves per week. the leaves seem long-lived as i've never had one of the new ones die and i've had the plant for a year. just my experiences :)

I keep melon sowrds - IME when they are new leaves they sprout up in a reddish brown color especially near the veins of the leaves - as they unfold they fade to green - i think it's just the way the plant grows in
