THaks tanker, I saw a red melon this past weekend in the show tank at the same LFS I bought mine at. the ones they sold me are not at all the same as the one they have in their show tank. More research is next.

melon swords growth patern is determined by ratio of night/day. Long day and they try to grow emersed, short day and they stay submersed.
Doesn't have to be much, just slightly shorter or longer than 12 hours for that to start to take effect.
