Mess with the water chemistry or not?

What afro said use a reef base substrate like crushed coral, aragonite sand maybe a few pieces of Texas Holey Rock, this will aid in the hardness staying in the range you need it to also your fish will thank you as well, well if you go the Malawi/Tanganyika route that is..

A good substrate is Caribsea aragonite substrates and they have a lot of varieties to choose from including crushed coral down to suger size sand with different colors..

I used a bag of crushed coral, a bag of pool filter sand, and some black sand I bought at the LFS. Coral for the structure. My pH stays at 8.4 in the African tank, and comes out of the tap at 8.2.

Hmm, I was hoping to not mess with water chemistry if possible... Then I don't have to worry about adding chemicals or worry about pH/hardness fluctuations when I am doing large water changes, etc.

Given my water parameters, do yo think it is really necessary to alter the chemistry? It seems to be within the recommended range, albeit at the lower extreme end.

I wouldn't. You should be able to raise the pH a bit with the substrate/ rock-work, and it's likely that if you're buying fish from your local stores and breeders they've been raised in your tapwater anyway.

Not too many do mess with the chemistry aye too much money for them unless their a chain store where they wipe their nose with money hehehehe..

Most of the LFS in my area do not change their water perimeters. Even Dave doesn't mess with his water...we have naturally hard water (I say liquid limestone), and it's unnecessary.

I think the area where you live, water is hard so its not very hard to go with the decision of not changing the natural water chemistry. In my case though, it is on the borderline. But I think I will go ahead without any additives and will monitor water condition often and see what happens from there...
