i was planning on useing ro water for top off/adding elements, is this a good idea or is ro too stripped down for live plant benefits? I understand keeping a well kept environment for algae issues,........ohhhh do i ever...
RO water is good but it does strip just about everything out of the water, so your best bet is to mix it with tap water until you get your desired water chemistry ,then add what ever you want to it. BTW RO water is not the magical cure for algae ,although IME it does help a little.
Unlike coral, plants do not need to be acclimated to new lights. The photo period still must be about 8-10 hours of light.
But wow--that is a lot of light. You going to have to have CO2 and ferts for that light or algae is going to go nuts!!
tanker i am deffinatly going to do so, but just out of curiosity why would i have algae problems because of the light,,oh im also only running the 175 not the 250
At really high light you would have higher CO2 and fert demands. It's just a bit easier to get the balancing act fine tuned at lower light levels. Even if you got everything spot on, the novelty would probably wear off when you realize that you spend too much time pruning.
I would go with a 10 hour light period. And as Reiverix stated, it is easier to get balance in a lower lighted tank, but me personaly I like seeing rapid growth from my plants so I prefer a high lighted tank, maybe it is the challenge of keeping balance as well.
