MH only? or MH and PC (or T5) combo?

^^^as above^^^^ But from one that has been converted to halides let me tell you that I PROMISE you will not be sorry, unless high quality bright light that helps your coral thrive is a bad thing...LOL

From what I'm told... PC's are better for soft corals while halides are better for hard corals. My LFS actually recommended that in a 90G (since it's not very tall) that I get a halide fixture one one side for hard corals and the leave the softies over on the other.

So, I don't know if my LFS is just saying that or if jojo, etc have a different setup.

Either way... I don't think I'll be running into an extra $800 to plop down on lighting. I also have a wood canopy... I know I can't get away with getting rid of that to hang lights from the ceiling.

I'm kind of interested to look into this more (150W) as it's a bit more affordable. It would also allow me to get a second one down the road.

Hey Drew, I'm also thinking of getting the one on your first link. I am debating between the Outer Orbit (MH and PC Combo) or Sunpod (MH only). They're both made by CurrentUSA and have heard some positive feedbacks on this forum. I know the dr forster has the 60" for 799, but I googled some websites and came across ones for about 720 after tax and shipping. Not a bad deal I think... I found the sunpod for about 690 after tax and shipping. I don't know.. It's a tough call, I'm actually somewhat leaning toward the sunpod though... just because the outer orbit only comes with 2 MH which might not be enough to cover my tank, 5 ft long.

Thanks for your input. Appreciate it. I'll keep you updated on which one I choose.

DON"T get the viper, it was used by qutie a few nano reefers when it first came out and got awefull reviews. for a bit more money coralife makes a clamp on HQI light, it needs a simple mod to look right ovcer a nano but it of much higher quality. (Mod is to mounting hardware, not the light itself)

Whoa! Thanks!

Talking about this one? http://www.hellolights.com/aqadhatamo.html

Can you comment on the other part... PC's are better for soft corals while halides are better for hard corals. My LFS actually recommended that in a 90G (since it's not very tall) that I get a halide fixture one one side for hard corals and the leave the softies over on the other.

I want to keep the wood canopy. So, I'm guessing I move my PCs kinda toward the front of the tank and then put the halides toward the back. My tank is 4' wide... so it would probably be best to get the 48" of this:

That's $425...

You have a 55 gallon?

So, I would need just the halides then? I guess I could possibly get like $125 - $150 for my power compacts. Which would make up for the large investment...

You know... this is one thing that just kinda frustrates me about this hobby. LOL. My LFS says halides are too much for softies. Some say it works. Some say both. I wish there was a clear cut answer sometimes... LOL. I know there won't ever be.

I was just looking... LOL.

So... a couple of discoveries:

This unit has an "under canopy" setup available, but it needs a glass top. earlier, it was suggest that a glass top isn't the greatest. It looks like you have a glass top though with your canopy...

Right now I have
Coralife 48"

2-65 watt 10,000K Daylight & 2-65 watt 03 Blue Actinic Compact Fluorescent Lamps, 2 built in ballasts, 3-3/4 watt Lunar Blue Moon Glow LED Lamps , 2 cooling fans

I think the one unit I mentioned in the first link would work. That should be just the right amount of light...
