What about some bamboo shrimp? They get to about 3 inches long and are pretty cool looking.

I would try ghost shrimp. They are a little bigger than the cherries and such, and my survive better. I personally wouldn't do a bamboo shrimp, as they feed on micro food in the water column, and may not get enough food. Unfortunately ruling out cories and catfish rules out a LOT. There are some very small loaches you could try, like some of the schisturas. Peacock gudgeons would work, if you can find them. Other small gobies might work, but make sure they are FRESHWATER. Alot of the gobies advertised as freshwater are actually brackish.
