the second picture from the top is a round goby. invasive species to the great lakes.

It's actually a Greenside darter Etheostoma blennioides. A nice aquarium fish.

Below is a round goby Neogobius melanostomus. We get the round goby as well.

im pretty sure that is a pumpkin seed. i always thought that the freshwater sunfish were pretty cool, and with pumpkin seeds being my favorite

Pumkinseed always have a shorter opercle (ear flap). The flap also has a distinct but short red spot instead of a continuous margin. Pumkinseed also have a checkerboard appearance on the soft dorsal. Spots on the flank also are characteristic of pumkinseed. In general they appear similar but the breeding color of the male shown is obviously a megalotis.

hurray for native fishes! Thanks for posting, teleost :)

One day, I need to post pics of the natives I've picked up in my travels...

Neat fishies!

Took a 50 mile canoe trip this summer with the Scouts, and was amazed at all the neat fishies swimming around us. Would have loved to "borrow" some and start up a tank, but would have been hard to transport home; not to mention as seeing as how it was a National Park/wilderness area (Buffalo River in Arkansas), would have probaly been against the law...

aardvark1,
You might be right about the legality of keeping the fish you found. Plenty of legal ways to collect fish and take them home. In most cases you don't need to look any further than your states fishing regulations to find out whats legal where. You can also purchase US native fish from legal vendors with the magic of online buying.

The farmertodd links are a great way to familiarize yourself with some of the fishes native to northern Ohio.

Some friends took me to some fantastic spots recently (over last weekend) and thought I'd show them off.
