Tommorow Im going to probably pick up a filter and heater for my new tank. My LFS carrys a brand called Millenium, Ive never really heard of them and am sort of skeptical of them.

They sound sort of fancy but I want to be sure Im getting something good for my tank. This tank is going to be for Malawi Mbuna cichlids so there going to be a bit messy fish.

Please if you have any suggestions let me know.

Thanks again

That filter is made by Aquarium Systems Which is now a division of Marineland.
Take a look here for more info: Aquarium systems

Heres a review site featuring this filter: Review site(click here)

I personally think that Aquariums Systems/Marineland make EXCELLENT filters and other aquaria hardware.

Good luck!

It seems to be a fairly decent looking system from the picture and write up. As long as the fish store accepts returns I would go for it. I personally like Aqua Clears but those seem fine. With a cichlid tank I would aim for the largest you can afford.

I know it is difficult to put your faith on manufacturers filter size recommendations but the tank size recommandations for filters seem a bit wierd. The largest one appears to be rated for tanks between 20-100g that is quite a wide range, so much so that it makes you wonder if they are marketing an overpowered filter for a 20g tank or an undepowered one for a 100g tank. Of course I could be overly zealous in my skepticism and these could be reasonable tank size recommendations. You can also maybe check out the following sites for some other opinions on this filter:

Well acually over all the reviews look pretty good for it. Only complaint I can see is really the difficulty of finding replacement cartriges but my LFS carrys them so that shouldnt be a problem, I might give it a try, if I do Ill let you guys know how it goes, itll be a while though :)

The replacement cartridges is only a problem if you actually replace them. I have never replaced my HOB filter media in over 2 years. Many on this board have probably gone longer. I got rid of my original media, bought an oversized piece of generic media sponge from my fish store, cut it to size and stuffed it in. Each water change I rinse it out in old tank water. I only add carbon if I see a need (mostly if I have to remove used medications).

My younger brother used one of these filters for years, it burnt up after a power outage, and he has complained about not having it ever since. He really liked the filter and can't find another one locally. He is a cartridge user, so he won't buy something unless the local LFS carries replacements I have not tried them personally, but as was said above IME Most Marineland products are a good value for the money you spend. Although I don't put huge amounts of faith in his judgements, he has worked at an LFS, he has owned AC, and whisper filters and has enough experience to make the comparison.
Dave

P.S. My brother is notorious for low water lines, and poorly cleaned equipment so I wouldn't let the fact that it burnt up after a power outage scare you either. He has had plenty of AC's and whispers do the same thing over the years.

dont get that filter, i will tell you why.... i know nothing about it!!!! BUT i got a brand new to market filter for my 30 gallon. i could not have gottne better. It cost a little more (15CDN) but that is not much. The Hydor Bravo filter is king. Really it is, it works off a pressure system and forces the water trhogut the media. Check it out on there website

After going to Big Als and talking filter talk with them there (they really are good at my LFS) i found that this is the best option. you wont regret getting one. They really do rock.

Not that i mean to bash a product i correct my self by saying that. i am sure that they are GREAT. But i belive Hydor has the right idea by useing a force system.
