mini filter

So I made it last week. All I had on hand was 2"x2" squares of gauze in the first aid cabinet, so I used those. have had to change them out 3 times already as it is doing a great job. The tank is a 1.5 hex, soil capped with black sand. an anubias nana tied to some Malaysian driftwood, a very small crypt wendtii, a few pieces of java moss that have become algae (which I think looks kind of cool and natural) then I picked some cabomba and a few stem plants from the local river. also got some azolla and duckweed floaters, but the evaporation rate has them sticking to the sides and drying out. I am using a halogen lamp, and will swap it for an LED so maybe it wont loose as much to evap.

The picture is a day before I made the filter. needs a water change because between the driftwood and the dirt, tannins are off the charts. Ill get a pic with the new filter after I do some maint.

Sorry, I should have updated sooner. This pic is a couple weeks old. I was told that is hornwort, not camboba. It has taken off like crazy. I also have a hitchhiker snail that popped up. He went through some tough times to get there, including soaking in a water/bleach solution for 2 days. Still too small to get a decent pic of him.

cotton gauze is probably much better than polyester at clearing up tannins, since those should really like getting back into/onto cellulose. however, unless you're changing them out pretty often, the cellulose gauze is going to start rotting out on you, which probably won't be pretty
