I'm looking for a good small aquarium system - 5 gallons or less. So far the only ones I've seen have incandescent lights and undergravel filters. I'm planning to keep a betta in it. Does anyone know of any with flourescent lighting and power filters?

You can buy a small tank in the terrarium section of most LFS, and the filter in the fish department, an aquaclear mini filter, or even a sponge filter could work. It would probably cost more than the 5 gallon kits. Or try walmart, (if your located in north america :) )they have a 5 gallon that sells with no filter added, so you can pick your own components.

I have a 2 1/2g w/an UGF which was from a kit just like you are talking about. It was doing fine until today after 4 months the filter slowed down. My tank is a hexegon shape so no over the tank filter fit. I got a submersable filter that works great.

I agree w/Swinfins if you can find a terrarium or something that holds water w/out leaking. The filter I got was only $25 at Petco. I have male betta and two dwarf spotted cories in there and they love their new filter. Even have been floating in the current to relax.

Might cost a bit more but trust me w/my recent experience w/UGF it is worth it.

Good luck to you and happy fish!! :D

I have a perfecto 2.5 gallon, I bought a Red Sea Deco Art Nano Filter at Petco works great. I also use a Hagen compact heater 25 watts, 6" long, and half the diameter of a regular 25 watt heater. It cost me as much to put this together as it would have a 10 gallon with the same quality equipment but I love my nano tank. It's planted with a Betta and 2 African Dwarf Frogs.

Check out the site in my name and you can see some pics of my 5 gallon. I use a normal light bulb on a clip thing thats on a shelf above my tank. The lightbulb is enough to heat my water. and I use an ELITE Stingray underwater filter in it, it suction cups to a wall of it, and looks pretty nice.

If you're in Britain the Fish-R-Fun tanks are just what you're looking for :D Trickle bio-filter with tiny powerhead :D and integral lighting system, all in the lid :D the only thing I changed was to substitute a cycled sponge instead of the activated carbon filter cartridge, it's silent in operation and the filter is easy to get at to clean the sponges. There's even space to fit a small 25watt heater :D My son has the 21 litre hexagonal glass tank and it's easy to run. But see my post on transformer safety - if its possible to worry I will :D :D

Get a sponge filter, I have a Jungle labs Dirt magnet Jr. in my 5 gallon, works great. I DID have a betta in there but he's been sick the past 2 weeks so I had to put him down. There are now 2 Gold twin bar platys in the tank, got them Friday. I use a 25 watt heater in the tank as well. I do a 1 gallon a week water change/vac.

Hi i just bought a 5 gallon Aqua Brite V from walmart includes everything but the heater which i bought a submersable one for. The tank is a new model from their company you can read up on it at www.hawkeyeaquaarium.com. I plan on putting in a couple of whiteclouds to cycle it then add a betta once it is cycled. The tank was 55.00 cdn. Which was a steal compared to others i seen for 80.00 plus. Good luck and happy fishing!!!
