Minimum tank size for an oscar?

The minimum size is just that...the minimum. I agree with most here and say a 75g would be the minimum I would keep an adult in. Double the minimum and you have the ideal sized tank for an Oscar.

heres another question...is width better than lenghth for oscars? for example is a 4x3 tank better than a 6x2

Simply cut the fish into one-inch cubes and count them.
Silly question...
Nice one. I have seen oscars over 3 feet long so she should go for something big. Visit MFK for some advice.

HAHAHAHAHA! 18" I would love to see that. On the average, an Oscar gets to 15" at the most in an aquarium. That does not mean they get don't get larger. The ones that do go beyond that are very few. The largest I have personally raised was 13-14 inches. A 55 gallon tank lacks ample swimming room, especially room to turn around. Because their bodies are not long and slender, they require more turning room. They do require the extra water simply because they generate a lot of waste. Probably as much or more than a goldfish does. For more than one you need length as well so each can have personal territory. A 75 is bare minimum for 1 and for 2 you need at least a 6ft tank.

Length is better. A 6x2 tank is much better than a 4x3 tank. 6 ft gives them room to stretch out and get a good coast going :-)

55 is the essential bare minimum for survival basically. A 75, or really any 48x18 tank you can find is much better.
