minimum tanksize for ONE discus

i have a 30g tall(extra high). its footprint is that of a 15g so imagine 2 15g's on top of each other.

first off, can that be fine for just one discus and one bristlenose?

also, i see discus are usually kept in large groups but that is to prevent bullying. cichlids don't really school they are territorial so why do i never see discus kept 1 to a tank like angelfish?


and if you think a discus wouldnt work in that tank (for life) then what about one angelfish (with the bristlenose)

Although discus don't do the "traditional" schooling, they are very social fish and as such seem to be happier in a group. I've had small groups and large groups and the larger groups interact so much more. I haven't seen any territorial behavior in any discus that I've had. Protective while fanning eggs...yes, but not territorial at all. I think one discus or one angel would not be a good idea for the tank. For sure the discus would be lonely. Can you think a bit smaller size fish so that you could keep 2 of the same type of fish. Fish like friends of their own species!
 
I think you may find that discus will show some 'schooling' behaviors when they are kept in a group.
they will establish a pecking order but they do loosely school.
as mentioned, the tank has too small of a foot print for either species.
 
the thing is i wanted a cichlid but i dont want anything that will dig up plants.

rams i am not to fond of. maybe kribensis but they CAN dig up plants i have read.

could i do a breeding pair of kribs with the bristlenose?
 
personally, id go with a few bolivian rams. they're tougher than german blue rams and are just as pretty. id know; i had bolivians for 2 years and they were wonderful, but a tad shy, fish.
