So about three days ago one of my goldfish disappeared, and the filter I had on their tank was a filter that had come with a tank I bought. Well the filter didn't have a basket on the end of the tube but I I figured the tube was so small and my goldfish are all a good size(at least 3 inches long) I figures they would be too big to get sucked up in it and they for sure would be strong enough swimmers to avoid be sucked into the filter. Well when I was doing my nightly round of the tanks making sure everyone was accounted for in all 13 tanks that's when I noticed that the first goldie was gone. First thing I thought about was the filter, took it apart and couldn't find her. I attempted to check behind the tanks and under the tank but I couldn't find her. I eventually gave up after half an hour as there was no trace of her body anywhere.

Well today I went into the fish room to put away some tank decor and I glanced over at the goldie tank and another one of my goldies was gone. So I'm like "no way can this happen again in such a short period of time" so I checked the floor and behind the tanks again and then again started taking apart the filter. Took out the media, removed the tube and no sign of fish. So I started to put the filter back together and I decided to give the tube a quick shake, and nothing. So I shook it again and I felt a thump in the tube. So I panicked and rushed the tube to the living room where I have a vacant tank that's in the process of becoming a planted tank and I filled the tube up with water and gave a couple of hard shakes and out popped a goldfish...

It was my white goldfish the 2nd one that had gone missing. So of course she sunk to the bottom. I held her in my hand near the surface for 5mins and then stuck her in a small breeder box. She was obviously stunned and her mouth was completely open like she couldn't close it. I was totally expecting her to die but at least it wouldn't have to be in a tube.

Well she has seemed to come back from the brink of death, she's getting very active and refuses to let me get near her with my hand. So I moved her to a nursery net. I'm trying not to count my eggs before they hatch but I'm hoping she'll make it. During the freak mishap with the filter she has an injured eye. It's swollen, resembles pop eye but her eye is clear and looks to be unharmed with the exception of it being swollen. So I'll just keep a close eye on her eye:rofl:and see if it heals or if it gets infected. I did a thorough inspections of the black tube for missing goldie number one and I am 100% sure she's not in the tube so her disappearance is still a mystery. Oh and she is now able to close her mouth. So anyways thought I'd share my drama for the night. I started crying when I discovered there was a goldie in the tube, I felt like such a horrible fish mom and I'm really hoping she'll pull through, she's so active right now and I hope she stays that way. The filter has been turned off in the goldie tank until I can make the necessary modifications to it and hopefully I can return my survivor to her brother and sisters soon.

So I believe she has made a full recovery which I'm thrilled about. The swelling in her eye has gone down almost all the way and I'll soon be putting her back with her friends.

Yeah I'm pretty happy, she was practically dead when I found her and I can't believe she recovered. She was anxious to get out of the nursery net fore sure.

It's amazing how tough fish can be!

Wow, that's one heck of a ... well, I can't call it a "fish story," can I? ;)

Glad she made it and is recovering completely. I bet she avoids that intake tube in the future.

Of course I covered the intake tube, although it doesn't seem to matter seems how it stopped working 6hrs after I turned it back on and I've been trying to get their filter to work ever since, it's not the propeller but I'm still trying to figure it out. No worries they get daily water changes and they have an air stone. So yeah it's pretty amazing she lived and the swelling in her eye went down the next day. I still wonder why she couldn't close her moth for the first few hours when I found her.
