missing catfish

I just recently bought two pictus catfish for my 55 gallon tank. However, two days later they both are missing. I do have to red belly pacus in there that a friend bought for me for Christmas. Which now I wish he wouldnt have because of how massive they will soon become. Does anyone know what might have happened to them? At first I thought the pacus ate them but I have smaller fifh also in the tank that were never bothered by them. So if anyone can help me figure out a solution.

do you have a tight fitting lid on the tank? They're pretty jumpy fish. it could be possible that maybe they died and ended up under a tank ornament. How long was it before you discovered them missing? Tank mates pick at the corpse of deceased fish sometimes ripping it to shreds, which end up in the filter.

Yes I've had many fish "disappear". You have to assume the other fish just go crazy when they find food. My cichlids are jumping out of the tank at feeding time and always hungry so I don't put it past them to eat a corpse.
