Got back from the LFS today and found they got in a shipment of baby angels from a local breeder. I would love to add a couple of angels to my 55 gallong community tank. I currently have 1 angel in there who's about 6 inches tall. The babies are about dime-nickel size. I'm wondering how well the'd possibly get along together? Would the big one pick them death, or would they quickly settle into the pecking order?

Other inhabitants of the tank:

6 danios
7-8 cories
4 platies
1 upside down cat
3 glo lites

No, those babies are much too small to be added with the other angel. You will have trouble adding any size angel to the tank because the single has claimed it as his territory. I once had a pair of angels in a 90 gallon, and went to add 1 angel from another tank into the 90, and they are still fighting to this day (was a few months ago). Angels can be territorial (typical cichlid!).

Also, those babies are so small they might not even survive the move. I would wait until they get older before you purchase them... that way theres a greater chance of them surviving. (also its not good to buy from new shipments, you should wait at least a week).

I've added angels to the tank before. They were about the same size as the one that's in there or a little smaller than him and they got along fine. He would swim with them in a group and the tank was as peaceful as it normally is. The angels died for unknown reasons, but I never observed any agression.

I wouldn't have any angels in a 55 gal tank. Angels are rather large fish and need plenty of room to thrive. According to what I've read they would need *at least* aound 73 gallons.

They are big fish, but they're not active fish. Mine hangs out in the same spot pretty much all day long. Every time I walk by the tank he's there. All the angels I see at the LFS do the exact same thing. I've heard they need a tall tank, but 75 gallons for one angel would be overkill.

They don't need that much room. A typical breeder keeps their pairs in 20 gallon tanks - and these are the good breeders that care about their fish. Check out The Angelfish Society and you will see that many of them that produce the best fish out there keep their pairs in 20 gallon tanks.

Well, I don't doubt that they will *survive* in 20 gal tanks. The question is, do they enjoy life in such a small tank?

once the angle grows up w/ out other angels, it can become a loner, adding other angels w/ the old angel could be disasterous, my angel is like this... had i (had a bigger tank and...) tried to ad other angels w/ it when it still was about an inch tall.
Also, im pushing it w/ haveing one angel in a 30 gal, i dont have any other surface fish either (the black tetras stay in the mid to bottom) trying to add any to a 20 probly wouldn't work... maybe a 20 tall, but it would be a stretch
some angels may do fine in a 20, it depends on personality, ex. the one in my 30 gal is fairly active, so it would not be smart to try and put it in a 20 w/ other angels, because it would attack the other angels and it would feel cramped

I would think if they will breed in a 20g (i assume 20g tall) then they are certainly on the "happy" end of the spectrum.
