i know that you are not supposed to put rainbow sharks together because they will be aggressive with each other, but since most of the time same species fish aggression is due to similar coloration, would one be able to put one rainbow shark and one albino rainbow shark in the same tank?

Bored is right, these fish might get along ok for a little while but as they mature, it will end in disaster. They are aggressive with torpedo shaped fish, much different than fish such as bettas which are aggressive to flashy coloration.

rainbows will not mix with each other no matter what colour variation and will not mix with the very closely related red tail shark either.

both the rainbow and redtail will attack anything that looks similiar to it as the other guy said even something like a baby bala shark

thanks for the info. would you be able to put a rainbow shark with african cichlids that are about 3-3.5 inches? there are 7 of them in a 55 gallon with a pimodella cat.

my rainbow so downright mean. I had to take the tiger barbs out of HIS tank before he killed all of them.

Thinking about putting a 10" Oscar in there with him... the little jerk...

My rainbow shark was a sweetheart and the only forms of aggression he showed was when fish were in/near his house and even then he'd only chase them out and never nip. I think as long as you have enough space/hiding places they sharks will get along maybe until they reach adulthood. I guess theres always a chance you could get a really aggressive one but I don't think they are as bad as people say.

I have 3 rainbows, and 2 red tails in the same tank, and they get along fine. The biggest one is the red tail, hes about 3" and he leaves the other ones alone other than to chase them away from his cave. There are occasional head buttings, but thats normal play behavior. Nothing rough. Now i do believe it depends on the individual fish though. The very first rainbow i got i had to take him back. He tried to kill the other sharks, and would chase every fish in the tank everywhere. Didn't matter what they looked like. Well all of them except the pleco.

Contrary to what I said before, I do believe that its best to not mix but I don't think its as bad as people say. If you have the tank space/hiding places and don't end up with a particularly aggressive fish It can work but I wouldn't suggest it.
