moderator abuse

I have been a moderator on several forums (still am).. and if you had any idea the kind of childish non-sense mods have to deal with you would understand...

I was an admin on a CS:S server.
I was the childish one then (come on, a 14 year old with power.. IN A VIDEOGAME?) Lets just say I (and the other admins) made the clan who owned the server lose a lot of money. It was a lot of fun though :evil_lol:

Trust me, if you really think that these (semi) grown up people are bad judgment makers, then we should just let anyone run the site for a week. I can almost guarantee half of everyone will be banned from AC.

I'm glad we have this group of mods. Try other places where the mods DO abuse the power. I'm also glad I have this website, even if they were, I don't think childish mods could scare me off.

And reeeeaaalllyyy.... If all they edited out of your post was the word "d-bag" then WHY are you this upset?
One word... that just so happened to miss the word screener.
You really can't blame them for doing their job.

Interesting thread - good to see that by and large you guys can see where we're coming from because honestly that's all you want as a mod on this site. Its a process of subjective judgment calls - my judgment calls will not always match yours, even as between other staff we will disagree - and therefore inherently there will be times when not everyone agrees with the call made.

As a general comment, editing/deleting posts is really a pain in the neck; we're here to talk fish and enjoy our membership of the site. The actual process of editing/deleting is not part of that, and consumes time best spent doing other stuff. In other words, we'd really rather not.

From my part - thanks for the support :).

edit : LOL@mad - came up where I was posting

also to the OP : 'moderator abuse' as a title for this thread ? Personally I think you've gone a little heavy there, but that's my subjective view. Nothing wrong with discussing the ins and outs of an issue like this but I don't think we're seeing abuse on the site; at least I have not come accross it. That's my subjective view of course but I will say as a fact that if I thought there was a problem with abusive staff conduct I wouldn't be on staff.

As for getting kicked from the chat-room...come on. It's a chat-room on a fish site for goodness sake. How serious can a "kick" be?

Suck it up.

I couldn't agree more with ZZ. The thing is, every time a post gets deleted or someone gets booted from chat "unfairly" it's usually never unfair. If you have second thoughts about how something you want to post is gonna go over, don't post it. The more you learn to self censor, the less they'll censor you. As for it happening in chat, not to call anyone out (Jon, lol) , but usually people are toeing the line and know they're doing it. If you happen to exceed a particular mod's tolerance level, don't tell me you weren't trying to or seeing how much you could get away with to begin with. Mods have different personalities, some will deal with more bs than others, but all of them will reach the tipping point eventually. As far as AC members go, I think I'm pretty opinionated and pretty vocal, but rarely to never do I have my posts deleted. Just like you would in any other public place, try not to act like a big jerk and you won't get punished.

One thing as well, everyone needs to realize that we staff works as a full team here. Feel free to blame one mod for taking action if you like, but it really does not work that way :).

Any compalints that you have of a specific moderator, follow the mod, global mod, admin, as lupin has posted.

I for one think our mods are great. I have had no issues with posts being deleted/modified. I understand that we all have our moments of feeling strongly about something. The trick is to phrase what you say so that it gets your point across without being offensive to ANYONE. Not everyone thinks it is ok to use foul language verbally or written. It isn't so much what you say, it is how you say it, that gets the post edited.

PS. Quite frankly, as a Mom, if my child said d-bag, they would get their mouth washed out with soap (Dawn). So I appreciate that there is someone on here that edits out words that my 7 year old daughter is reading.

Personally, I think the term d-bag is a bit trite. Surely an educated individual who can pronounce the scientifc names of hundreds of fish, flora and fauna, can come up with a descriptive term better than d-bag. I think the moderator had the right to edit the word out just because it was *yawn* "as my children say: so 70's"
perhaps more inventive, creative, fish applicable styles would be more appropriate....
i.e. a real piece of snail deritus

major set of marimo's there

appears one may be suffering from worm head

:)

Probably better would be that one is suffering from hole-in-the-head. That not only applies to an insidious fish disease but also takes a nasty connotation when applied to humanity.
