Mollies and salt

Mollies don't really NEED salt to survive, however, they do much better with 1 tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons! It keeps them happier too! And will help them to breed, if that's what you wanted them to do!

**Make sure you use AQUARIUM SALT! :)

Good Luck!

I would disagree and I think Harlock would too. You don't need salt. Its used mainly as a disease prevention device if you fish are sickly. If you do use salt, mineral salts like in a cichlid salt mixture would be better. The salt is benefitial to the mollies for the hardness.

I thought of keeping the pregrant mollie permanently in that special net for giving birth in the tank until the fry is born.....would that be ok if she stays all the time in that net?

The breeding nets are very stressful, IME, it's better if you let her give birth a few times and get used to her cycle. That way you can better tell when she's going to give birth and therefor get all the fry and also have her in the net as little as possible.

Well, i have raised mollies for almost 2 years now, and i use salt, they have been doing great!
And have had 245 babies!! (total) Which are very healthy!

I would and do, KotG. How are your mollies doing much better than mine, I wonder, puppylover? How are your fish happier than mine? If breeding is any indication, let me assure you, my fish are at it non-stop. I feel sorry for the poor females in fact and I only have one male! I assure you, he's happy. Also, why be sure to use aquarium salt? Are you trying to change the TDS of your water? It's simply unnecessary and I challenge you to read the links provided by myself and Tricksterpup and also this one. Best of luck to you and your fish.

Yes, Aquarium salt is bad for your tanks and fish. If you are going to make your tank Brackish, then I suggest using salt geared for Salt water tanks. This salt is made for this type of setup along for regular saltwater. But really you do not need salt, what you need is water hardness. Hardness is the major factor for Mollies and other live bearers but they can survive and do very well in acidic waters as well.
