Molly fry coloration

I just had platy babies, I can tell because the mother was thinner. There is a male that followed her around a lot, but I think it was for the food. She was a sunburst platy. I also have a pregnant dalmation platy, and two pregnant lyretail molly's. I have the same problem as you. I have saved 5 babies out of who knows how many and 3 of them are orange like the one I think is the mother. But then there are also the other two that are really dark brown. I have only had them for a few days so I cant really see any color changes. However, I am trying to figure out which are male and which are female. They are so small that I cant see. I see a bottom back fin but I cant tell if it is a 'female' fin or just the fin in front of either fin. Then again my males dont fan out their fins in front of the male reproductive fin. I guess what I am trying to say is that I imagine it would take atleast a couple of weeks. I was either told or read that I would have to keep them seperate for a month so they can grow big enough not to be parent food. Good Luck.

My dalmation molly has babies all the time, well, once a month. They're always pretty much clear, with a cream/orange tint to them. Last time, I caught em and put them in a breeder tank I'd bought, cuz they always get gobbled up.

They stayed the clearish color for I guess 2 to 2 1/2, but at the 3 week mark I started noticing that they were getting a few spots on them. By week 4 they look like actual little fishies, they're kinda silvery, with fat little bellies, and many more dalmation spots.

Today was the 5 week mark, and I released them into the *big* fishy tank, finally convinced that Momma couldn't eat them anymore. They're completely silver except for a bit of their tails, and the spots are far more pronounced. I can only assume that the bigger they get, the more spots there'll be.

Hope this helps a little, and best of luck with your babies. :)

They are what-over three weeks old now? Have you seen any change in their colors? I am very interested to see how long it took you to see this. Please llet me know. thanks.

If they are really that orange this far out, they may not have the dalmation coloration. My dalmations bred and the fry were a pale yellow for a few days, then they went silver and started to show spots within a week. Sounds like it may have been an orange male that bred with her.

This far out they are still extreamly orange... kind of the color of orange/red swordtails...thinking they could be platys... had a female platy about that color but she died before I saw the fry... who knows??/ but I still have them both and the one with the black dot has a few more dots on it's tail and is almost twice the size of the other... :hang:

question bout molly fry's

lol..im kinda newb on them, and i have similar question, the thing is ive got a pair of dalmatian molly's, and like 4 balloon mollies (1male, 3 female[2 orange marbled, and 1 white]) thing is..that right now i have white fry, well dunno grayish, whitish fry, and my dalmatian seems thinner (not a clue if she was pregnant..) and i discovered that my white female balloon molly was dead the same day the white/grayish fry appeared and she was considerably thinner....so can anyone tell me how to differentiate dalmatian fry and white balloon molly fry?

please...
thanks in advance....
