I have a small tank that has two mollies a betta and two swords. The molly has begun bearing fry which have burrowed into the gravel and one is actually living in a small pool of water in the filter. I am not a breeder and I am not willing to set up a new tank - I don't have the space for it. However, I would like to give the fry the best shot at survival that I can. What are suggestions that others have?
I have 2 coconut halves with Java moss on them and some fine leafed plants. Not sure what they are called. I have babies in my tank and I just notice another very small fry. They hide in the coconuts, moss, leaves and gravel. At least 5 of mine have survived to 1/2 inch. I don't do anything special. I just let nature take its course. There is a Glo-lite tetra that hangs out in front of one of the coconuts and chases the very small guy back in.
I don't know what my survival rate is but it is some. Good luck.
I have guppy fry and they are pretty much invincible. If you have plants (or any other type of hiding place) and maintain good water conditions, they will grow surprisingly fast - you don't even have to feed them anything special as they just forage on the smaller particles of food that the adults leave behind. While they are small they will hide among the plants to avoid getting eaten/chased around, but after a few weeks they'll become big enough to just swim freely among your other fish.
best thing for it is to become a snack. another fish will just increase the bio load to a overstocked tank. sucks to hear but its for the best of the tank.
