Help! my molly (female) has a very swollen bulbus eye! what is this and is it contagious to my other fish?? please help! :help: :help: :help:

You are discribing 'popeye'. It is a symptom of many kinds of diseases. So, we need your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate readings. Also, how often to you change your water and how much to you change. What are your molly's tank mates? How long have you had the tank set up and how long have you had her?

No, it is not contagious in and of itself. But, because it is a symptom, the disease could be in your tank. Get back to us asap with all the above info.

Its a bacterial infection called popeye, i recomend doing a full water change right now, and doing a 50% everyday until it clears up. its usually caused by dirty water. as for medications, i dont know what to use, but im sure someone else here would. Good Luck!!

Dang Cathy beat me :thud:

I did water changes and used melafix when my betta had popeye and it worked well. Cleared up in a couple of days. I would recommend a large water change and daily water changes until it clears, then weekly waterchanges thereafter.

her tank mates are listed in my profile and the levels are...
nitrates-0
nitrites-0
amonia-0-.2
pH-its been 8.0 for the whole time the tank has been set up which is about 2 months

How often do you do water changes?

usually once a week

Hmmmmm. . . your nitrates should read @ 10-20, not 0. You may want to check it again. Ammonia and nitrites should read 0. More pwc, especially with that bioload. I have a snail and a 3" fish in my 10g, and it seems overcrowded.

ok sorry i was just using the test strips for the nitrates and its "safe" in between 0-20
