monapi wood and java moss.

I have a pretty decent size patch of java moss attached on the top of my manopi wood I didn't tie it down or anything. I'm hoping to cover the exposed potions with the moss. It would make it so much easier to trim it. I hope it anchors itself soon. Any idea how long it takes? TIA

To sound like an anal-retentive nut (which I am), it's actually called mopani wood. And I've learned that moss will attach & thrive as soon as you stop waiting for it to. I would recommend tying down with thread - just spread the moss out and wind the thread around the wood. I've also wrapped the wood with the java moss and then wound a thread around to secure. It took about 3 months for the moss to really start growing. You may have more success if you cut the moss into 1-2" lengths, spread over the tops of the wood, and secure with either thread or netting. Cutting seems to stimulate the moss to branch out instead of just grow longer (From the tips).

Remember that old infomercial... "Set it and forget it!" That's pretty much what I recommend

I have flame moss on my wood... it's just now started to spread sideways (filled in first), and I've had it tied to that wood (thread went away long ago) for over 6 months.

thanks for the correction on the misspelling at least you knew what I was talking about LOL. I think I have some thread. I've been trimming this buch of java moss frequently. Will the thread interfere with the RCS's ability to hide in it? I'm not sure I can take it out of the water it's where by baby shrimp live. But I really like the look of the tuft of java moss that is on the top portion of the wood. I'll locate my thread and post an update tomoorow. thanks fishycat.

I'd just pull & tie down some of the moss, or cut off a bunch and use that with the thread. That way the shrimp still have a place to hide.
