mondo grass.

A better question would be "In the water or out?" The answer would be "out."

mondo grass is not an aquatic plant.
see here for a good list of non aquatic plants: http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide_list.php?category=11

if you bought it already and dont want to return it, put it in your back yard, or a pot in your house.

long story short....you would be better off buying plants from the classifieds here because you will get higher quality plants, at lower prices, and in much greater quantity.

have a good one!

If you have Cana, marissa or other herbivorous snails- I'd put it in with them... It'll look pretty for a few weeks- but the snails would probably eat it before it rots since it can last a while in water before it ultimately dies.

So the snails get a nice pretty snack! ;)

Despite not being a truely aquatic species, Mondo grass can and will grow and thrive underwater for long periods of time. Ive had the same bunch of Mondo grass in several tanks for over 2 years now. In fact, its the only plant that has survived every tank and setup ive had, and its currently doing better than ever in my 55. It has grown so much that i just took out 90% of it to give to my dad. I only have maybe 15 stalks right now but im not worried because the way its been growing itll be back to its previous size in a month or so. It seems to do best with medium to high light, ferts(i use flourish and excel), and a lower ph level. I cant wait to see what it does with c02!

I think its gotten a bad name because its most commonly sold at Petco and Petsmart...and people absolutely HATE those places on here for some reason. I dont usually buy fish from there, but ive bought several plants from them(they are mislabeled alot) and its where i get basically all my food and ferts.

It gets a bad rap because its not a true aquatic plant, not because of where its sold. If my LFS had some for sale I still wouldn't buy it...it will rot away eventually. It makes a much better ornamental plant than an aquarium one.

I've used it where the roots were in the water and the plant out of water. it is not a true aquatic and if you submerge it you will need to keep an eye on it.
they have been prone to rot when submerged.
keep in mind that many of the chain retail stores do not deal only with fish but may sell turtles or amphibians. the mondo grass would do well in some of those tanks.

You've been lucky. Mine died.

I understand that it isnt a true aquatic plant, but i know from personal experience that it doesnt always rot when fully sumberged. Maybe my water has just been perfect for it, or the fact that my tanks usually have alot of water movement so they most likely have a higher concentration of o2 than many planted tanks...or just plain old Irish luck lol

Then just keep doing what you've been doing.
