Moon Lighting for aquariums

I like this site for lunar light. It has a "lunar tracker" that simulates the different phases of the moon, from full to no, and everywhere in between.
I bought my LED parts and the plans from that site, Great service although i didnt do the lunar tracker setup. Highly recommend to anyone interested in moon lights.

If you use LED moonlights, I'd recommend 3-4 on a 55g
I'd honestly say 5-6. I currently have 4 LED's i built in my 55gallon and it doesnt light it up enough to see anything hardly. Im going to add 2 more LED's in and see what happens from there.

I agree, I was thinking of going five in my 55g. (maybe I should consider 6 now?)

This is the recommedation from thelebos.com for led placements.

Mine arent like this because of the way my tank is set up but I still have some tweaking to do. If you can set your LED's up in this pattern you should be fine, because where i have 2 LED's not too far away from each other it looks good. Also i would recommend ordering a special LED lens to diffuse the light.

I was thinking doing the leds for my main tank but I am a bit worried about how many I am going to have to use.

:OT: Centralharbour you dont happene to live in Japan

i've decided on a T8 bulb to go with the ones i already have, just tried it looks good, but can't really tell due to the amount of daylight coming into the room.

the bulb is a 30" 25W interpet Blue moon Actinic the main wavelength range betwwen 400 and 500nm.

it gives a great blue tint to the tank when one with the main bulbs, sun-glo and aqua-glo. would it be a problem to fish/plants to leave the blue moon bulb on with the daylight bulbs and then on it's own at night?

at the momnet its set to come on at 8.30am before main, off at 10am then back on before lights out at 9pm turning off for the night at 2am. ok?

Charlie,

Those are cool lights indeed! I wonder, do you think I'd need two of them for a 55gal? I especially like the mini-moon bright's!

Thanks.

honestly don't know. I can't get one this weekend so once I have one (next weekend!) i will feedback and let you know how they look on my 30g tall.

Am also picking up a 100g bow so will test them on that allthough i think i might need multiple units depending on level of light i want

The mini moon bright is their brand new design and got a good review in Practical Fish Keeping (think it was Feb 05 issue)

I think the number of LEDs will depend on how bright and well-covered in blue light you want your tank.

If you are looking for the entire tank to be "carpeted" in blue light, then you will want anywhere from 5-8 LEDs for a 55gal.

If you want just some "rays" of moonlight to shine down in your tank, I'd recommend just 3-4 for a 55gal.

Note, the number of LEDs required may also depend on placement of the LEDs and the placement of decor. For instance, I have my LEDs mounted off of my strip light toward the back of the tank. Since I have some taller rocks, driftwood, and other decor in the middle section of the tank, the blue light has a backlit effect.
