Anyone use this? did it turn your water brown?
I have 2 pieces of this stuff 1 i have had for a while and soaked it and scrubbed it for about 2 weeks and no problem,a month later I got another piece did the same thing. Water turned brown with in days (was not turning brown when i soaked it but i changed the water every day too) I took it out and repeated the process. still same thing I have since took it out and there has been no discoloration since. Did I get a bad piece?

I have used it and it always leeched tannins (tannins are what turns the water brown).

But then again I only soaked it for a day or two.

a piece of driftwood could leech tannins for up to a year, i boiled my mopani wood for about 2 weeks and i still leeched tannings for a little while. i thought it looked kind cool towards the end the water was a little discolored. your wood is fine

Many folks strive for that look on purpose.

Boil it for an hour or two, or let it soak in hot water for a couple of days. After that, it shouldn't be much of an issue unless you either use a piece of wood that takes up most of your tank or never do water changes. If you do regular water changes then it won't build up tannins enough to discolor the water much.

Actually, it will depend on how long the wood was cured to begin with and the specific area of the tree it came from. I have had mopani, treated by me in the same way, some leaches for yrs...others for months.

Ditto. I've had pieces that leeched almost nothing, but it was a smallish piece in a 44g tank. On the other hand, my 75g has pieces (many more than the 44g mentioned) that are still leeching some slight tannins after having been in the tank for over a year. When I keep up with water changes (weekly 50%), the color is at most very very slightly yellow.

Thanks fir the feed back. I don't think I am going to put it back in there might be to much for a 10G. Plus I don't feel like doing that much work right now but I will try it if I get a bigger tank....

the tannins won't hurt the fish. you can just leave it and do normal tank maintenance.

I have a piece of mopani and every time I put it in my tank in about 3 days it starts to get a slimmy film on it. Any help with that
