Moray and lion idea for the future.

Psst guys not sure he was asking about a volitan, he asked about a small lionfish so I'm guessing dwarf.

Fox, I think your friend is being ultra conservative on how much it will cost to start up a tank. It doesn't have to be outrageously expensive with brand new top of the line everything by any means but the tank itself will be one of the cheapest things you have to buy for it in the end. Were you needing to limit the budget to $300 US or was that just the number your friend gave?

I mean can i keep it with a moray?
And do i have to feed the moray only live foods?

Lets back up for a moment. Is the following correct?

  • You have a 300 litre/80 gallon tank already
  • You would like to create a predator tank
  • You'd like it to include a snowflake eel
  • You'd like to know how what the eel needs for nutrition
  • And you are now asking if a trigger will be OK with it?
Did I get any of the above wrong? Is there any different info?

Ok here they are

- no
-yes
-yes
- um i have done a bit of googling and i thing what i will do it breed feeder mollies but mainly give them muscles and i was wondering can i feed it stuff i caught from the near by rock pools e.g small fish and crabs.
-yes and are there any other fish that can live with this snake?

And yes i do know nothing about SW fish keeping.

The snowflake should take well to frozen marine foods. Some eels need to be fed live food at first to get them to eat and then the aquarist will switch them over to frozen and use a feeder stick. I don't believe the snowflakes typically need trained with live though. You can make your own frozen mix or breed for it but I'm not certain where you are collecting from and how pest and disease free it is.

The snowflake should leave fish that are larger than it alone. They aren't necessarily going to after a fish but their eyesite isn't the greatest and will bite at what comes nearby which is why small fish often end up as snacks. Ornamental crustaceans will be a favorite snack.

The snowflake is a good choice of the eels available for marine tanks but you'll want to read up on their care such as how to stabilize rockwork and secure the tank from escape. Many die from the latter. Then if you're sure you want to tackle having an eel as your showpiece we can recommend what would work well with one since the tank would be better stocked around it I feel. Triggers can very well be OK with it but some of them can be quite aggressive and if the eel is your showpiece...

Ok i will go do so big time googeling now.

O before i do are there any SW fish that can be bred for feeders?
