Me and my friend are having an argument. I told him that brittle starfish are more aggressive than chocolate starfish, but he insists that chocolate chip starfish are far more aggressive. The reason I ask is because he's been keeping SW for 15 years and I've only been keeping for about 2 years. So who is right?

Green brittle stars can become fish eaters, most other brittles are pretty safe though. Choc. Chips are not reef safe they'll eat coral but don't think they'll bother fish.

Define "aggressive".

If we are talking "will destroy your stationary tank inhabitants" then Chocolate Chip Starfish. If we are talking "may hunt down and kill your fish in the middle of the night" then Green Brittle Starfish.

Also, Brittle Starfish is not a single species but a blanket name for a whole group of species. There is quite a bit of variety in that group. A lot of them are perfectly harmless and passive.

Well green brittle. Im talking about what would do the most damage to a fish not stationary. Such as a tang, trigger, etc.

Well I don't think a green brittle would be much of a threat to an adult tang or trigger, young one sure.

Green Brittle would probably be more at risk from a Trigger then the other way around.

But yeah, a Green Brittle would be more of a risk to fish. More of things like Blennies and Gobies then Tangs. I mean, it could potentially get a small Tang, but Green Brittles are ambush hunters. They prefer to go after fish that like dark caves with green ceilings (which is serves the fish right, NO ONE should like a green ceiling). A Chocolate Chip wouldn't hurt a fish (well...it couldn't catch one so you'd have to ask it if it would like to hurt the fish, assuming it could catch it). It could potentially wipe out more money though since it could take out a large portion of a reef tank.

Because my friend said the chocolate chip would do more damage to fish than a green brittle, we didnt get into details about the size or fish

Fish are safe for choc chip stars, lets put it this way 1.5" harlequin shrimp eat CC's for dinner.
