more hermit debate

hey! - a couple weeks ago, i got two what were supposed to be blue legged hermit crabs. however, when i got home, i noticed that they actually had black legs, with white stripes going down them. they are growing like crazy. so here's my question; my snail population seems to have been greatly reduced, if not eliminated since i got these guys. coincidence, or bad hermies?
 
They sound like zebra hermits, they typically wont kill for food, but they will kill for the shell. What kind of snails did you have and what size are they? How big are the hermits?
 
mostly turbos, and, yeah, the hermits have been parading around in different shells every couple of days. most likely their latest kills! that's what i suspect, anyway!

they could be hawaiian black legged hermits...or are those the same as zebras? I think I got a few of those on accident when I got my blue legs...but don't know where they went. Probably eaten by my evil blue legs.

With regard to your hermits Cmar, the majority of my crabs are zebras with a cuople of red legs and a couple of blue legs. Yes a lot of my snails died but I now know it was not due to my crabs.

Mine also seem to be growing fast (frighteningly so). Your best bet is to try and get some larger, empty shells for them to use.
 
yeah, mine are really growing, especially compared to my others! and, probably thanks to them, there are a variety of shells now! but, none of them have designer tags that i can see! ( annette g!) and, they do seem to strut a bit with their latest finds! must be female, ' cause they seem to change often!

FYI, my husband creates about 1000x more laundry than me OR our kids.

I've noticed that my hermits have already been changing shells around. I still have 2 snails I know I bought that I can find. I talked the gal at Petco into giving me a bunch of empties too, so hopefully that's all they're doing, just going through their closets, trying to figure out what to wear.

Crab 1 to Crab 2: "does this shell make my butt look big?" :lol2::raspberry:
 
I have three blue leg hermits, and they too have changed shells as well. My snails are fine however, I have Astrea snails. Have your hermits mollted?
