Hi,

Ok regarding my 90gal that I want to stock with Goldfish. I've been reading several posts and hope that I'm not asking age-old questions.

1) I saw that white play sand is a good media to replace my current coral. The coral was to add to the Ph for the cichlids. But, it seems to me that sand would suck up into my python everytime I cleaned and did a water change. ??? No??

2) I want to buy a book on proper care of Goldfish. But, I'm on a limited budget like most. Is there one book (maybe two) that have all the information I would need? I'm not a beginner aquarium keeper, but I am new to Goldfish.

3) It appears that having a Pleco and a couple of snails is no problem with the Goldfish. But, no one has said anything about frogs. I love both the drawf frogs and the bigger ones (I think they're called claw-something). Will the frogs be ok with the Goldfish?

4) Where is the best place to buy? I usually purchase from Pet Solutions online and have never had a problem. But is there somewhere else I should consider for re-stocking?

Thanks! Everyone on here is so helpful. I really do appreciate it!

BTW, would everyone prefer that I separate out these questions into different postings?

Hi dhanks! Multiple questions are just fine! I'm going to move your thread over to the goldfish section where it will get proper attention. That's where the goldfish experts hang out!:)

Sand is good with goldies because if they ingest it it passes harmlessly through their system. Take the gravel attachment off of the siphon and just skim over the sand with it (fish poo is lighter than sand so it stays on the surface). You'll lose a little bit of sand but it's no big deal.

I'm not sure if there is a book like that out there, there are some good articles on the internet though... I'm sure some one else can get a second opinion for you on that one ;)

I think that apple snails and goldfish can be kept together, but don't keep plecos with goldfish as they can suck the protective slime coating off the fish. ACF's (African Clawed Frogs) will work better than ADF's (African Dwarf Frogs) because they are larger, but I'm still not 100% sure about compatibility.

4) Where is the best place to buy? I usually purchase from Pet Solutions online and have never had a problem. But is there somewhere else I should consider for re-stocking?
I think that where you get your fish is fine. You could also look for local or online breeders as well, though it may cost a bit more.

You quickly learn to hold your siphon just over the surface of the sand, sucking up the waste and not the sand.

Forget books. Nothing you find in a book will compare to the weath of knowledge available here, with experienced keepers. Do not waste your money. The internet is a better option.

Frogs and goldfish should not mix, and neither should most plecos. A bristlenose may be appropriate, but also may not. I choose to keep goldfish with goldfish ONLY.

4) Where is the best place to buy? I usually purchase from Pet Solutions online and have never had a problem. But is there somewhere else I should consider for re-stocking?

The importance is to find healthy fish that you like.
:D

Thanks! Everyone on here is so helpful. I really do appreciate it!

I hope this helps!

What is the reasoning behind the frog and pleco separation from GF? I'm not questioning your judgment. I'm just trying to learn and understand. At the fish store the other day the guy had a pleco about 8" long in a tank with the goldfish. ??

A large enough goldfish will eat a frog.

If you're looking for books, I suggest amazon or Borders. While there's a lot of information here on AC, books are a good source of information too.

Ok. Thank you! I do recall that the pleco in the tank did look different from the one I used to have. I will ask Brian for permission to photo. He is very friendly and probably won't have an issue with it.

In looking at my Pet Solutions catalog, I would say that the one I used to have was a Common Plecostomus. The one in the tank at the store resembled more closely to the Spotted Rubber Plecostomus. But I will get try to get a pic for accuracy. My catalog does not have a picture of a bristlenose.

Don't worry. I will not be doing anything in a hurry. Not only are my funds limited, but my knowledge of taking care of the tank by myself is also limited. Like I mentioned in a previous posting, my husband has done most of the work. The tank is so large, that I have trouble reaching into it even with a stool. So I have to figure out a bunch of stuff before I make any changes.

Right now, my two favorites are the Bristol Shubunkin and the Double Tail Common Fantail.

I also like the Ryukin, Tosakin, Wakin, and Jikins. But those four may not do well with the Shu and Common??

I'm not much on the bubbleyed, telescope, or orandas.
