I think you would be better off if the shade area was towards the back of the tank. You are going to need to occasionally thin the ranks, it does grow quickly (hence why I had so much to give away two weeks after having some given to me, lol.) The roots are thin, the longest I have let any if mine get was about 6 inches long.

If you let the frogbit alone, the roots will eventually grow all the way to the substrate.

I am so sorry, Matt. I have yet to have any casualties like that, your goldies must be particularly voracious (most goldies are.) I would put it in a jar in the window, not in direct sunlight but were it will get bright light for most of the day. You can add a small piece of shrimp pellet or some either meaty food, just a tiny amount, every so often and that will "feed" it. Just make sure to not let the water get too nasty, and still rotate and clean it every so often.

I have one in a jar in my kitchen and it pearls every 3-4 days, definitely neat.

That's what I did with mine, have them in a jar. Actually brought them to work and have them in my window here at my desk.

What does it mean when it pearls. I've seen pictures that people say it's pearling, looks like a bunch of air bubbles coming out., mine was doing that when I got to the office from being gone a few hours this morning. But what exactly does that indicate?

It is merely photosynthesis causing oxygen bubbles to form on the surface.

I'm naming him Stirling. Stirling Moss. (you have to be an F1 fan to get that)
