I'm a big fan of tetras. I like them in small tanks, and I love them in bigger tanks as a schooling fish. BUT, my bleeding heart tetras have to be the most boring fish I've ever owned. I expect my plecos to disappear and never come out, but these guys are the most skittish fish I've owned. They only come out from behind the plants when I'm out of the room, and they disappear as soon as I walk in.

I have a pretty good amout of cover in the bottom 30g:

Anyone else have this experience? Anyone else have any fish they regret purchasing because they just aren't that fun?

The most I ever regretted at first was my Platydoras costatus. Few months later, he now shows up a lot.:grinyes: I was confused and surprised at the same time.:screwy:

What cover? I don't see "cover."

I have 3 bleeding heart tetras in my 30 gallon as well. Two of the bleeding hearts are active and are out quite a lot. But the other bleeding heart hides a lot. He hides in the rock cave that I have more or less all the time. Once in a while he'll come out and swim around but hte majority of the time he hides.
He comes out to eat but he'll grab some food then go back to his cave, then eat then go back to the rock. I guess it depends on the personality of the fish. The shy bleeding heart is the largest of the three.

Right now, I am regretting my Metae cories. I have 4, have had them for about 6 months, and i NEVER see them! They hide in the back behind the plants and I never even see them eat!!!! Drives me nuts, because next to my Borellis, they are my favorites!

Maybe you should try adding to the school of the bleeding hearts. Having only three of them is not a proper school. They will display more of their natural behaviors if the school is adequate and there is a lot of plant cover. This includes having some tall plants as well so they can hide if they feel insecure. Having more plants and hiding places for them just in case they feel threatened actually will bring them out more since it gives them a sense of security. Having only three the third one is like the odd man out and it is possible he is being bullied. Keep a close eye on him just to make sure he is not being bullied. It is also entirely possible that he is just a shy one. They all come with their own little personalities.
