So what's the most expensive cichlid out there? I was curious after seeing a pair of full-grown Red Dragon Flowerhorns at a local store the other day priced at $500 for the male and $400 for the female. I'm not sure I could ever see paying that much for one fish.

Flowerhorns are priced like that because of the asian belief that they bring good luck. The pattern and size of the nuchal lump determine the value.

Wild caught adults of various cichlids usually bring the highest dollar. $125-150 is not uncommon.

Proven pairs of discus or select strains of angelfish bring high prices.

Top-end flowerhorns can fetch $10,000+, although they do not come close to the top Asian arowanas and koi, which can command prices of $100,000+.
