Mouth Disease in the Guppy Tank!!!

So, I brought home a new guppy and tossed it in the guppy tank. Big mistake. She promptly broke out in ich spots. Okay, no biggie, salt and heat. A few days later (now spot-free), she's rocking a white mouth. By the next morning, her fins are white, too.

I go to the store, pick up some Maracyn, which claims to treat Columnaris (which I've tentatively ID'ed this as) and add as directed, along with a dash of Melafix.

By the end of the day she is covered in white/grey, clamped fins (one front one half gone), not eating, and then later swimming vertically. I put her in a net holding her up to the surface so she can get some more oxygen (oh yeah, did I mention I'm still heat treating the tank?) and a few hours later she is looking somewhat improved, though still pretty bad.

Now, in the mean time, a second guppy has gained a milk mustache and a touch of white on one fin.

Question: Is the Maracyn going to fix this? Or should I be doing something else? I'd rather not have the whole tank wiped out.

My current game plan is to do a 75% water change tomorrow morning, then add the day's dose of Maracyn, as well as more salt and Melafix to replace what was removed. Lather, rise, repeat for the rest of the week. This is complicated by the presence of newborn fry in the tank.

The tank is an 8 gallon desktop bowfront (I'm slightly overdosing the Maracyn, with 10 gallon dosage packets). Tank inhabitants are one male guppy and his harem of 4 guppy females, as well as 9 guppy fry, born yesterday in the midst of all this drama. There was an apple snail, but I pulled him out before salting the tank (he's hanging out with my Bombproof Betta™ for the time being). Don't know the exact paramaters, but it's an established tank, and I do a 40-50% water change (with gravel cleaning) at least every other week. Temperature is currently sitting between 86 and 90 ºF.

Maracyn should treat the columnaris. Get a quarantine tank if you plan to get new fish. Always quarantine your new fish for a minimum of at least two weeks. The longer, the better. Lower the temperature to 78 degrees. Higher temperatures often help the columnaris progress faster.

I'm not in the clear on the ich, so I'm leaving the temp up. These are just throwaway guppies I'm breeding as food for my ghost knife, so this is pretty much a quarantine tank for food anyways (with a side of breeding for more food). I'm in a dorm room, so an additional pre-quarantine tank isn't really a viable option.

The Maracyn should knock this out? The only reason I'm concerned is that I'd thought Maracyn was for gram positive bacteria, and looking on the internet, Columnaris seems to be gram-negative. But the box listed this as a disease treated.....

Okay, thanks. The guppy took a turn for the worse, so I went ahead and euth'ed her in a shot of everclear a few minutes ago. Hopefully the Maracyn will treat the rest of them. Next time I'll be more discriminating in my guppy-buying.

This is definitely why I breed my own food instead of buying a feeder and tossing it in with my baby, the ghost knife. I couldn't imagine what I would do if this happened to him. :/

Thank for the sentiment, and for all the help. I wasn't too attached, as I'd had her for all of 5 days, but it's still a bit of a bummer. I'm just sad she suffered before she went.

It also doesn't help that this is a disease I'm completely unfamiliar with. I didn't even recognize it at first. Ich I know, this? not so much. It's frustrating to feel like I'm stabbing in the dark with treatments and then it being a case of too little too late anyway. At least next time I'll be prepared.

This does raise the question, do I replace this guppy? I have my receipt, and I'm within the free replacement window, so it's a possibility. But is this an ideal time? I guess if the store replacement is as likely to be ill, I might as well get one now while I'm already treating the tank. I guess the other option is jut to scratch anymore fish from that store, as they're likely to be diseased and waiting would probably just start this whole cycle over again. For a $1.25 guppy though, it might just be worth writing off...

You can try obtaining a 5g tank for a quarantine and put the new fish there. Give it four weeks being stuck there until ready for move to the main tank.
