Mouth fungus on Swordtail?

Mouth Fungus - Update

Hi All,

Here is an update regarding the flexibacter columnus bacteria that my sweet swordtail got in the form of mouth fungus. I treated for the full 7 days with Melafix - did a 50% WC - and continued with it, now on the 3rd day. She is still mostly hiding out and her mouth still has some fuzzies but looks better then it did. She is also still eating some. On the 6th day of the Melafix I saw that one of my bronze cory cats also was affected  hiding out - but still eating some....

Today I received via 2nd day Fed Ex some Kanaplex :perv: which is supposed to treat both gram negative and gram positive bacterial infections as well as fungal. Instruction say every 2nd day up to 3 treatments. I hope this works. I suppose between the Melafix, low PH, soft water and slowly lowering the temp from 79-80 to 76-77 has helped keep it from getting much worse.

If anyone has used Kanaplex please let me know your experience. Did you wait to do another WC when all 3 treatments were finished? Did you have to do it again?

I will keep you all informed as this progresses.

Thank you, Kathy

I'm sorry I didn't see this thread before.

Kanaplex should do the trick. I've battled flex before. I haven't used that med but it's one of the best to use, according to some of the research I did. It just wasn't available to me. I used Maracyn and Maracyn 2.

Try to use the antibiotic exactly as directed, unless you start to see dangerous amminia or nitrite levels. In that case, you would do a water change between treatments, even if it doesn't call for it.

Most of the meds are only active in the tank for so long, that's why you have to add more, so no sense in sacrificing water quality.

Kanaplex was not available to me either and the closet place to purchase anything at all is 70 miles away. I ordered it online and had it shipped 2-day. Thank you for your response. I am relieved to know someone else has battled this successfully. I will just continue to test for ammonia, nitrites or elevated nitrates.

Kanoplex was to late for my wagtail swordtail

I am sad to say that the kanaplex did not help my wagtail swordtail. The fuzz on her mouth looked like it was going away originally but then she eating and I found her dead one morning. On the other hand it did appear to keep it from spreading as my other 2 adult swordtails and 3 cory cats are healthy even now.
