Hi everyone,we are about to move in february,i have to take down my tank and put new water,pretty much starting out again.the tank has been up now about 5months,wife has been dumping tap water in it while i have been at work:mad2:,needless to say i have an algae problem now.anyway about my sandbed,it is 105lbs ls,should i leave it in the tank undisturbed? or take it out then return it to the tank after i get it in place?origianlly it was 55lbs tropical sand and 60lbs nature's ocean bio-active reef sand,i plan on adding 40more lbs the nature's ocean bio-active also.and buying more lr,right now i have about 70lbs lr.and to keep my wife from adding tap water i will be buying an RO/DI and rigging it for auto top off's.thanks for your input

As for transferring from one tank to another or same tank…
I can say keeping some sand to seed and starting with new sand is just fine. Up to you..but the benefits is you don’t bring the detritus build up along with the old sand …up to you.[/FONT]

[FONT="]All I did was put base rock in..new sand… then added 50% of the old tank water..then 50% new water. Its pretty much like a big water change. Put my LR back in and acclimated my fish back into the new display. I did this all in a day.[/FONT]

[FONT="]Only details I left out was keeping rocks in containers with heater and powerhead ..same with corals…and fish..seperated all 3 in different tubs of water… (glad I kept old equipment like heaters ).[/FONT]

we will be moving about 10min drive down the street,buying a house finally.the sand i buy is packed with water,same as i used before.It will be the same tank not transfering to another tank.i will try the google you suggest and see what i find.thanks
You didn’t mention tank size, but I would be a little leery moving 105 lbs of sand plus the weight of water it will hold, while still in a tank. The sand is about 5 months old so it has already developed anaerobic stuff in the depths of the sand (as well as waste products). What I would do is take out maybe 3 – 4 bags (or more) of sand individually packed in 1 cup each in each ziplock sandwich bags. Remove all the remaining sand and wash it. Put it in 5 gallon buckets (maybe 3 gallons worth) and rinse it with fresh water while stirring it up. Once all washed, put it in the new setup and seed it with the baggies of old sand.
my tank size is 75gallon,hence my title"moving a 75gallon"lol.i plan to take the tank down and remove all the water.i really do not want to keep any of the water as i stated my wife has been dumping tap water in it for the top off's.would it just be better than saving a few cups to just wash all of it? i do plan on buying about 40 more lbs ls when i set it back up.the tap water created much algae and crusted green on the back glass very hard.so i plan on all new ro/di water,pretty much starting over.for further reference i do have a 30gallon sump and skimmer.plan on new ph's also bigger than i have now.

yea i will just wash all of it and put a fresh 40lbs ls on top of it,i plan on ordering an RO/DI unit from the filter guys this time,untill i get it set up i will keep a supply on the side from the lfs.got to find me a couple of big drums when i get home too,i figure the local tractor supply store will have that(dont ask either about the name,tractor supply)i know you are already thinking why would a tractor store have drums.anyway thanks for your input and i dread moving all this stuff,but i know in the end ill be better off,plan on hard piping also.(unless i accidentally drop the tank and break it)hahaha then i can buy a bigger one:evil_lol:
well finally moved into our house,moved my tank at night time (no reason why) kept my fish in a 38gallon plastic tote tank with a power head and heater overnight,did'nt loose anything.got 100gallons of RO/DI water from the lfs had some left and bought me 2 brute 44gallon trash cans with lids.got my tank back up now,just need to mount my power strips and tie wrap my wires,also removed my old power heads 3 koralia 1's,bought 2 koralia 4's,much better flow now.tank is doing great now.almost all my algae is gone.next will be getting my own RO/DI unit installed and plumbed in for auto top off's.also rescaped my lr and bought 2 very big pieces of base rock for the bottom
