Moving a tank

maybe i'm desensitized about this, since i moved an hour...and then 18 hours...in the span of two months last year...but i would think a heater and an air pump are unnecessary for such a short move. there's not going to be an O2 problem is the fish are only in the container for a couple hours, and unless it's particularly cold, a heater isn't truly needed. nonetheless, the cooler idea is solid. i used two medium-sized coolers...this way i was able to pour the water into the tank after i got going, thus eliminating the siphoning issue.

as for moving the water, joe makes a good point. if you could test the pH and hardness of your new house and compare it, that would be a good call. this way, if it was radically different, you could focus on bringing more water. if it was about the same, then you wouldn't have to worry about water in excess of what your fish are travelling in.

I just moved my 90g planted. It was a large project. I took all my fish out and put them in a rubbermaid container DAYS before the actual move. I just hung my Aquaclears and heaters in the tub. Then I could take my time breaking down the tank, moving and replanting the plants, etc.

just acclimate the fish?!

it's not exactly a huge difference between you driving an hour or two away and buying fish. in that case you have the same kind of problems. you buy the fish, they stuff them in a bag, then you get them home after possibly being all sloshed around........... the ph may be different, the temp almost certainly is by then..........

getting fish shipped in could be even worse.

you don't need it, why make the move harder than it has to be? lugging 5 gallon buckets of water around isn't *my* idea of fun. not to mention trying to make them not spill in the move etc..........
