hey guys, another newbie question here... this will be my first (technically second, tank was'nt fully cycled and got the help of bio-spira) time moving my aquarium, I will be changing from gravel to sand too, got me a new stand and will be moving my 30G aquarium to it, got me a 20 gal garbage bucket (new) now I know the current fish I got are hardys (3 guppies, 2 dwarf blue gouramis, will also pick up 4 juv angels this Sat) but what are the pointers of moving my tank, I'm planning on doing this on Sunday.

Thanks

when my friend and I moved his tank a couple years ago we filled up the bathtub, declorinized it and stuck the fish in there until we could move the tank :)

not the greatest idea but it worked.

Best bet: Don't feed the fish the day before and of the move. Drain the tank--fill up that bucket with part of it, put the decorations/plants, filter media, heater, and fish in there. Cover the bucket with a towel--the dark will reduce stress, and prevent any jumpers. Put it in an out of the way location, so it doesn't get tipped over or moved multiple times. Dump the rest of the water.

Remove all the gravel. Move the tank to the new stand/location. Put in the sand. Add water without disturbing the sand--using a small hose, with a plate resting on the sand. Fill the tank about 1/2 way with fresh new water (de-chlor, raise to temp, your usual conditioning routine). Add decoration/plants back in, move in heaters and filter. Get the filter going to remove any sand particles (I've never had a problem, but lots of people have). Add fish, keep lights off for the rest of the day.

Monitor the tank. Your going to lose some bacteria in the move (especially if you had an UGF), so you may need to do some water changes daily for a while to prevent ammonia/nitrite spikes.
