How long does a Bamboo Shrimp need after molting before theyre safe to move to another tank? I moved it into my 20l about a month ago while i tore down my 55g and redid it all. I left him in the 20l for a while so that the 55 could get established and have plenty of food in the water column before moving him back. I was planning on putting him back in the 55 today, but he just molted a week ago so i dont know if its safe to move him yet? Ive had him for a little over 2yrs now so i know hes really old and i dont want to stress him out more than necessary. Though, to be honest, he isnt as happy in the 20l as he was in the 55. The 55 has a ton of current and a bunch of driftwood, rocks, and plants for him to climb on in the current. Basically, the sooner i can get him back in the 55 the better, but i dont know if its safe to move him this soon after molting?

Thanks in advance

Anyone?

I can't really comment on how long they need after moulting... Unless the water chemistry is different between the tanks, I don't know what you'd be worried about. I'd certainly try to keep the shrimp submerged during the move, use a cup instead of a net maybe. I'd be more worried about there not being enough in the water column. I know you've put existing stuff in there, but I've found bamboos really only do well in very old tanks. I've waited a month, and seen them climb right out.

Im just worried about stressing him out too much. Like i said, ive had him for over two years now and he was fully grown when i got him, so im guessing its 3 years old at this point. Most of them only live for up to 2 years so im just trying to be careful not to stress him out or injure him buy moving too early. Hell definitely be moved in water.

I think hell be fine in the 55 because i can see plenty of stuff floating around for him to feed on. If need be i can spot feed him for the time being.

i dont think it would be a problem. they are just more susceptible to injuries after the molt.

Injury is what i was worried about(and stress). I didnt know if it took a certain amount of time for them to be back to normal after molting. Id typically wait until he had his full color back, but hes been pale since i put him in the 20l so i cant tell when that is. Ill probably just wait a few more days to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the help.

It should be fine to move him. After molts shrimp, crays, crabs and lobsters tend to hide well there shell hardens which normally doesnt take that long. A week is plenty of time for him to be ok for moving. Stress is something every creature will experience when being moved from on inviroment to another no matter how healthy they are.

Okay I've tried searching and one site site said it takes a couple of days for a dwarf shrimp's new shell to harden and I've had shrimp that had molted dissappeared and came back out the next day so if it's been a week since your bamboo shrimp molted the shell should be good now.
By the way did your bamboo shrimp eat his/her molted shell?

Yea i know theyll be stressed no matter what, but considering his age and the fact that they feel more vulnerable after molting i just didnt want to add unnecessary stress. Thanks for the help man.

Yea he devoured his old shell. Well, most of it anyway. What he didnt finish was eaten within a few days by my snails. Im pretty sure all shrimp will eat their molts in order to get more calcium so that theyre new shells will form faster. He was eating his within 15 minutes of completing the molt, but he was in his dark cave so thats not usually what happens. Hell usually molt and then go hide for a day or two before coming back to eat it.

sounds like he's not getting enough calcium in his normal diet. I find it hard to keep my bamboos as well fed as I'd like, especially knowing that their preferred foot is baby brine shrimp and daphnia... crushing crab pellets into powder and getting it into the water flow might help him recover after a moult. I often supplement their diet with spirulina powder and crushed blood worm in the water stream, but it really doesn't do what first day hatch brine shrimp do.. they go nuts.

I only say this because, mine never eat anything off the substrate, or their shells. They strictly filter.
