If you want to go planted, I'd go ahead and replace all of your current fish. Think of getting a school of smaller fish and some Corys and/or Otos.
The problem with your current setup:
The fish will probably destroy your plants/aquascape and the bioload they create will grow algae and lots of it. Especially as they grow larger. I'd upgrade them to a 75G tank (without plants) asap.
You'll enjoy the 20G planted much more with suitable stock.
