Moving goldfish from 1g to 15g tank

He seems to be doing well! I did get a background, I'm not sure if I'll put it up because it seems kind of tacky... it's like a fake ocean scene. They gave it to me free so oh well ;)

Yes Chico, most people wouldn't go to these lenghts, I'm still not quite sure what's wrong with me! I think it was just this communiy and seeing how much everyone cares for fish. It makes me think it would be cruel to do anything else. I haven't explained what I've learned to my family yet, so they're saying "well you might as well get more fish to fill that big tank you have now!" No!!

I do have another quetion... I'm wondering if the filter's current is too strong. It seems that when Hank stops moving his fins, he moves around, even at the bottom of the tank (where he usually is). Also I'm not sure if the filter's intake head is placed too high or low, or just right. That was in the manual I think and I can probably discover that on my own :)

But I do wonder about the current. I don't think this Penguin Mini has an adjustable flow or whatever it's called... is there a way I can slow it down, assuming it is too much?

Andrman,

I've followed this whole scenario all the way through, and without trying to sound too patronising I'm impressed with the lengths you have gone to make Hank a good home. It's nice to see some-one go that little bit futher to provide the right enviroment even if originally it was more of a hassle than it seemed worth.

If you don't like the background most of them just have a plain colour (dark blue or black) on the reverse side. I prefer using that to the "actual" background a lot of the time.

As for the filter I'm kinda stuck on that one because I've never used Penguin before, but as you have found out I'm sure some-one will be along with an answer shortly?

Good luck.... :)

If you look at the top of the filter there may be a knob you can turn (kind of hard to explain where, the top of the filter may say high and low... one of my filters is set to low, and the other is set to high. I looked online and it's kind of hard to tell from the pictures, but from the few descriptions I've read there doesn't seem to be an adjustable flow...

If there IS a knob, set it between high and low, however my understanding is that most fish like to have a bit of a current to swim in, and unless you see Hank staying in one corner of the tank all the time, he's probably A-OK with the flow.

If there's an attachment to put on the filter tube to make it longer, try doing that, putting the intake closer to the gravel may help a bit... but like I said, unless he's absolutely not swimming around at all, he's probably cool.

edit: I found this online:

So you can definately buy an extension tube, if you feel strongly that the current is too much...

Thanks dwayne! I checked Google pretty thourougly and didn't come across that! The filter came with that extension tube mentioned, and the manual said it could be cut to whatever length was best.

So will moving the head lower cause less current and/or improve filtering?

So far he swims around everywhere, it's only when he stops moving his fins does it look like there is current. My worry was just that he wouldn't be able to sleep becuase the current moves him. Whether or not this is a problem, I don't know :o

:)

Moving the intake tube lower will get it closer to the gravel, and may help it pick up more gunk... I don't know about lowering the current though, I think most current is actually caused by the water coming back into the tank... you can probably cut the current down some from the water coming back in if you make sure that the tank is always filled right to where the water comes in (so it doesn't 'splash' it just blends into the tank). Honestly though, I don't think the current of a 100 mini will stress him out at all.

Also, as for a background, plain black or dark blue will probably look better, given Hank's coloring. My background cost me $2 - it's 2 big pieces of black posterboard strategically taped to the back of my tank (*knock wood* haven't had to replace the posterboard OR the tape in almost 4 years!!). But a background is really just a matter of whether or not you like to see the back of your filter and the electical cord...
