I have a Ornate Bichir that is about 10 inches long who is in desprate need of getting his own tank. I had done some research about having sand in the bottom of his new home but also had reservations. He is very very active and is always playing in his plants. If I have a sand substrate what is going to happen when he kicks up the sand into the filter...besides kill my impeller? Is there a way to safe gaurd my filter? Also what would be the best way of keeping his plants rooted in the sand, since he moves all over all the time is he going to send them floating? Or would it just be easier to keep him on gravel, but since he is getting so large I am always conserned about him swallowing gravel instead of the food.
Oh there is another thing that I am frusterated by. He will not eat flake or pettet food of any kind. He will sometimes eat frozen bloodworms or beefheart, but he will always eat feeders. I know that feeding him feeders is risky but if he doesn't want to eat anything else am I just left with taking the chance and doing my best to get healthy fish?
Any thoughts or recomendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
