I was wondering what is the proper way to move tanks. I know you should empty the tank all the way is it necessary to remove all of the substrate as well just curious? I am not planning on moving any time soon just would like to know for general information.

I've done it both ways (bare and leaving the substrate)
It's risky to leave the substrate in, but it's a pain to take it out. Usually what I do is leave the stuff in the bottom, place the tank on plywood, and carry it by the plywood. Obviously this only works for smaller tanks (55g and down)

i just moved my 20 gallon to a different room left the substrate it was ok but i was more curious for my larger tanks. Why is it risky to leave the substrate does it put stress on the glass? again just curious I heard the glass can crack what is the cause of this?

It can stress the silicone and the joints. I'm guilty of doing that a lot, and I've never had a problem, but I still think its bad practice lol.

Also, with the weight issue, is the twisting of the tank as you walk to the new location. This can aid in breaking/loosening a good seal and set the tank up for future failures.

I just did some reading up on a search while I was waiting for replies some good info and some bad info. I think I trust this site for good answers. I apreciate all the info. I hope I never have to move for a while but if I do I now know thanks.

I just moved my 75 (acrylic) no problems I left the substrate in with the plants(live)

I would recommend a frame of 2x4's tho.

the hardest part moving my tank was the wet/dry what a pain to undo the plumbing and reattach it all.
