for a first trip to Boston I'd actually recommend some of the more "touristy" stuff. Fanueil Hall area has lots of little stores and a good variety of food. Newbury St. and Copley provide high end shopping and people watching. The public garden is always nice for a stroll, not sure if the swan boats are out yet... I hear the duck boats offer a pretty quick crash course in the sights and sounds although I've never gone myself. Hanover st. in the north end is also higher on the list for first visits to beantown. I'd say take in a game at Fenway or maybe just a tour. I haven't done the tour but nothing beats a game at Fenway.
If you are a history buff then there is almost no limit to things to see. There is also the waterfront which is hard to beat. I suppose I should throw the aquarium out there, this being Aquaria Central.
