Where the ducks walk on the fish, PA
I have 15 juvie F1 Mpimbwe Fronts/ Gibbs coming to me on Tuesday. I have a 125 gal tank that is empty that will be their home (at least until they get larger and have to be thinned). Tell me the best layout for them. I have rocks and pea gravel at this point but am open to sand if needed. I know I will need at "cave" at one end, but what else. No wood? plants? What kind of lighting? I have 1.5 wpg for that tank, but I also have a 48" actinic that I can put on. Tell me what you have. Also, at 1-2" what food should they have. I have a huge assortment for my juvie discus, can they be fed the same? Oh and should I feed them 4-5 times a day like discus or less? Thanks for the help.

I would feed a pellet from NLS or its competitors every now and then feed some freeze dried or frozen Krill if you feed them 5x daily you will need to step up twice weekly water changes..

Not trying to rain on your parade but I am surprised that you are asking for information that you should have researched before purchasing these fish.

At this size they will eat most any offerings. Caves and hiding places will be needed before they hit breeding size so you have a bit of time to make it.Don't overload on high protein foods and try to offer a wide variety. Live foods are not required.

True enough that there is little on raising fry of just about any fish. The nice thing about these guys is that they can and will eat the same offerings the adults take in, albeit in smaller offerings. At the size you posted, they will be on a normal diet.

No matter what you feed, you need to be careful of too much protein and fat as it will cause bloat. They will actually eat about anything offered.

These are the foods I have available right now. Kensfish foods: cichlid stick mix, spirulina flake with garlic and papricka, brine shrimp flake, premium sinking red bits, golden pearls, freeze dried blood worms. I also have Hikari Cichlid Staple pellets and algae wafers. Which or which combo would be the best or do I need to get something else? I am going out tomorrow and can pick something else up if I need to.

What did/does the breeder who sold them to you feed them?

It is a nice touch if the breeder would send you a two supply of whatever he is feeding them so you can wean them to whatever you want to feed them. Call your breeder and ask him to throw in some food for this purpose as he most likely will not be shipping them out until Monday - call him first thing in the AM and you should catch him before he ships.

Get some NLS 1 mm sinking pellets - PM me if you do not have a souce.

Congrats on your Mpimbwe. I first got into frontosa many moons ago with some F1 Mpimbwe fry. Below is an old pic of them

You have a good selection of foods. Don't feed the bloodworms every day, use them as a treat.

I feed all my cichlids on all the same foods you have listed to give them variety. I don't feel you need anything different. I use Kens Premium Cichlid Pellets, for Hikari I use Cichlid Gold (red package) and sometimes the staple or bio. I also use some massivore as a treat as well.

Thank you both for the help. I am pretty sure I am ready for them to arrive tomorrow. But you know how it goes, anytime I get a type of fish that I have not kept before, I get nervous.

I feed my mpimbwes nothing but NLS. They are growing like weeds. Let me know if you need some NLS. I'll set you up.
