multiple fish in a small tank means multiple problems

If you're feeding him and he's not eating, then he's probably very stressed. What sized tank were the fish in? Did the pleco have sufficient places to hide (like a cave, a flower pot, large plants)? I'm concerned that in your concern to help the little guy, you may be inadvertently making his situation worse. Changing tanks is stressful, being pulled out of the water for photos is stressful, living in a bucket with (possibly no hiding spots) is stressful. I know you had the best intentions, but the pleco doesn't know that. The calming medicine might help, but ultimately, the fish is still getting stressed.

So, aside from the issue of getting him to eat, you'll need to work on minimizing the stresses in his life as well. Make sure he's got places to hide and escape to where he can get into the dark and feel perfectly safe. A flower pot with a portion of the side broken out might be perfect for this, but there are many other possibilities. If there's any way you could get him into his own quarantine tank without the goldfish, that would be even better. The goldfish is almost certainly adding to his stress.

As far as the foods go, the fact that the goldfish was eating his wafers is an easy fix. Just don't keep plecos with goldfish since they aren't really compatible in terms of temperature and environmental conditions. You should also try out different kinds of veggies. Yours might not be fond of cucumbers but he may love greens or zucchini or other aquarium safe vegetables.

Either way, I have a feeling that if you can reduce the stress on the poor guy and you provide him with food, he'll eventually start eating. Unfortunately, these issues (stress and appetite) are highly correlated, so you have to correct both at the same time. A stressed fish is likely to not eat, and a fish that's not eating is going to be stressed. Good luck with him.

When Petsmart gets their "common" plecos in, they could get a wide range of different species potentially. I wouldn't doubt that it isn't the true common strain, but maybe another very common type of pleco.

A friend of mine got a leopard pleco there for the $2.99 price....not too shabby.

Yeah, that's what has made me wonder too. They had three different species of 'common pleco' and none of them said 'hypostomus plecostomus' it was L. something and when i looked it up it couldn't be found

I feel like a monster. Which I know i probably am to Loop. He's not fully adjusted as he used to be. The goldfish will be leaving in a couple days. They completely ignore each other but they're both there for the foram-2. Once that is done he will have his own place. Meanwhile he does have hiding spots. Rather a hiding spot that he uses very well. Recently he's been sticking himself onto the bog wood i have in the quarantine bucket just for him. Otherwise the little guy is very good at hiding around the heater. In due time I'll be getting in some strong plants in his own tank.

Thank you for really being frank and taking an interest in this, there are no experts where i am

I always assumed the Hypostomus was the common pleco. Sailfin's can also be claimed as commons, they both share a lot of similarities. They both get to an average of over 16 inches. This guy doesn't look so hot. Your parameters don't show an established and cycled tank. Having him in there with a goldfish isn't great either because both fish produce a lot of bio gunk and as mentioned, both require different environments. It's hard to tell with him out of water but his head does look a bit thin, which is what I personally use as an indicator of the fish starving but again, it's hard to tell with him out of the water.

Ach, there are more of these beggars than you can count. All different sizes, lots of them identical when immature, and often misidentified at the shop. Never know how big they're going to get ;)

I need HELP!!

My rainbow shark has vanished from my tank. I have also a female and male Pineapple Swordtail.

Can anyone please tell me how an entire fish vanishes from the tank. I pulled out all plants and checked the filter. Its not there.

HELP!!!

In a 10 gallon your going to run into A LOT of problems with that stocklist. Upgrade soon, or risk your fish becoming stunted.
